The son of Sylvanus Billings Pond an established piano maker he took over part of the business of Firth, Pond & Co. to form William A Pond & Co. when his father retired. He was known for his range of high quality instruments ranging from pianos to guitars and band instruments and also as a music publisher
While he died in 1885 the company continued trading until 1917 under the control of his sons.
